50 YEARS

OF CARREER AND PASSION

24 ALBUMS SUPPORTING THE MUSIC OF MANKIND

Before being met by a few fellow musical travellers like himself, it was alone, in his studio that Alan Stivell crafted this beautiful tribute to time, inspired by the change of seasons and poetry.

The deep solace that transpires is supported by a « sound design » where vocals, flutes, and percussions build the mould for some contemplative music, a kind of avant-folk with an innovative electronic take.

Immemorial past and modernity come together in this passing of time, an AMzer.

Alan Stivell is first and foremost an original.

Not content with reviving a forgotten instrument in his earliest youth, he gradually brought in its electric version.

Not content with fusing rock music with the music of his roots, he went beyond this partnership to draw on all the influences available; eclecticism taken to its logical conclusion.

Certainly Alan Stivell is the high priest – and even the inventor – of Celtic music.

But this could make us forget that his is a quest for a Global music. There is no lack of modesty in this; just a rare and irresistible attraction to all music, from all places and times.

Listening to his 24 albums, it is easy to spot influences from all the main musical genres, references to various periods, from Antiquity to the electronic age, and a wealth of ethnic echoes.

The culture dearest to his heart, however, remains at the core of his work. Indeed, how could a truly universal music exclude the Celtic idiom?

Similarly, his voice travels through different styles, timbres and times, following his feelings and desires. Weightless, it has a very personal rhythmic accent.

His chosen words, his own or by others, travel like his voice and his music from one style and one language to another – including local accents within a text. The most Cartesian among us could get lost.

He calmly goes his own way.

And his audience seems not to lose a single thread – or harp string – binding them to him for half a century in some cases, a week in others.

ALAN STIVELL IN A FEW WORDS

  • From the age of nine (1953), his first recitals (Unesco, Vannes Cathedral, Olympia even) proved influential and saw the Breton revival  of the Celtic harp.
  • He took a passionate interest (and specialized) in Celtic music and culture.
  • From 1958 to 1966, he designed electric harps, sketched out a symphony and made his first recordings for solo harp. In another domain (more traditional music), he was recognized as among the best players of the scottish bagpipes.
  • In 1966, he began singing professionally (there were only two bards at the time, Stivell and Glenmor).
  • The following year, he signed his first contract with Philips-Fontana (Universal). His first recitals were already attracting imitators.
  • The first album Reflets (1970) is the starting point. It is also a manifesto for cross-fertilisation in music, looking forward to the « World-Music » to come.
  • His third opus, Renaissance de la harpe celtique, recorded in 1971, spawned thousands of harpists and lutenists throughout the world.
  • His Pop-Plinn, the first Breton-rock fusion, then notably the concert (Feb. 1972) and the album Olympia live (over 2 million copies sold) led to a huge popular craze: people called it the « Stivell phenomenon” and it permanently altered the image of Brittany.
  • By 1973, he had played in Italy, Ireland and London (Queen Elizabeth Hall in 68 with the Moody Blues). His international career now took off; he filled major venues in Europe (The Royal Albert Hall among them), US and Australia and appeared at big rock festivals as well as on TV.
  • In 1974 he set up the record label Keltia III, since distributed by various houses, from Universal to Harmonia Mundi.
  • In 1980, his Celtic Symphony / Tir na n-Og featured at the stadium in Lorient (Festival Interceltique) and at huge concerts (14 000 spectators in Milan).
  • Alan was not at ease with the status of « star »: in the 1980s, he made albums but they were more focused. His international audience continued to grow nonetheless (Italy, Germany, USA, Canada, etc.), though he often withdrew to his house at Langonnet.
  • After Legend or The Mist of Avalon and his meeting with Francis Dreyfus, he updated his essential hits. In 1993, the album Again began a new wave (triple gold disc). He notably invited his friend Dan Ar Braz (L’Héritage des Celtes was already under way). The resulting 1994 tour was a triumph. As in the 1970s, his wide audience and the new generations responded enthusiastically.
  • The album Brian Boru, produced by Martin Meissonnier, saw Stivell’s music even more firmly anchored in the music of the time. This trend was confirmed with the album 1 Douar (One Earth), with Youssou N’Dour, Jim Kerr, Paddy Moloney, John Cale, Khaled.
  • Before discs hit a crisis his albums were selling at a rate of 100 000 copies a year.
  • The early 21st century was marked by the instrumental album, Au-delà des mots / Beyond Words, the book, Telenn, la harpe bretonne, co-written with Jean-Noël Verdier, then the DVD Parcours (Fox-Pathé), which rapidly went gold.
  • In 2004 Harmonia Mundi began distributing the back-catalogue Keltia III by Alan Stivell.
  • In 2006 appeared the avant-garde Explore, tending to electro-rock and hip-hop. It again scored four keys in Télérama and the track « Miz-Tu » entered the playlist on France Inter.
  • In 2009, Emerald recalled his debut in folk-rock, but new millennium style.
  • 2012 was the 40th anniversary of his historic concert at Olympia in Paris. Universal released the best of Ar Pep Gwellañ.
  • Early summer 2013, that concert was made available on CD-DVD,   40th Anniversary Olympia 2012 (Universal). Then a new book co-written by Alan Stivell, Sur la route des plus belles légendes celtes, was published by Arthaud-Flammarion. An excellent film, Au-delà des frontières (Beyond The Borders), has been made on his life and work by France 3.
  • His 24th album, AMzer (seasons) will be released by World Village in September 2015. A long tour will take place in late 2015 and 2016, including a concert in Paris at La Cigale on 7 November.
  • That will mark his 50 years in the business, his music still innovative and rooted in the 21st century.
